    What to Expect After LASIK

Last updated 1 day 22 hours ago

If you’re thinking about having LASIK surgery, or have already scheduled an appointment with your LASIK eye doctor, knowing what to expect after your surgery can help you plan for the post-operative care and recovery time.

How Your Eyes Will Feel Afterwards

Immediately after surgery, your eyes may burn, itch, or feel like there’s something in them, and your vision may seem a little hazy or blurry. These symptoms are completely normal and should subside within the first couple of days. If you have any mild discomfort, your LASIK surgeon may recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever. You’ll want to have a ride home arranged, as you will not be able to drive safely. In addition, you may feel the urge to rub your eyes, but you should resist—rubbing may dislodge the corneal flap, resulting in the need for further treatment.

    What Medications You Will Receive

Your LASIK surgeon may prescribe medicated eye drops to prevent inflammation and infection. You should only use eye drops that your LASIK doctor has recommended, even if your eyes feel dry. You may also receive an eye shield to protect your eyes.

    How Fast You Will Heal

Healing after LASIK surgery is remarkable fast. Although you may experience blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and halos around lights the first day after surgery, you should see a significant improvement over the first few days.

    What Care You Will Require

24 to 48 hours after your surgery, your LASIK surgeon will examine your eyes, test your vision, and remove the eye shield. Your LASIK doctor will have specific after-care instructions for your recovery, and it is important that you follow those directions carefully. Over the first six months after LASIK surgery, you can expect to see your doctor several times for follow-up care and exams.

    How Conductive Keratoplasty Works

    Last updated 14 days ago

LASIK is not the only type of refractive surgery that is available for vision correction. For patients who are farsighted or those experiencing presbyopia, Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) may be a suitable alternative to LASIK. The CK procedure can be performed in a matter of moments, does not require any cuts into the cornea, and can offer excellent improvement for close vision to eliminate the need for reading glasses. Read through the steps listed below to better understand how this procedure can alter your vision:

    1. The eye is prepared: For your comfort, a topical anesthetic is applied to the eye before the procedure begins. The eye is held open with a special device to ensure that the doctor can achieve optimal accuracy.
    2. The cornea is marked for treatment: The doctor marks each cornea to note how it will be shaped. Like LASIK, CK works by changing the shape of the cornea. Each eye will be reshaped a little bit differently, as the goal of the procedure is to balance vision in all fields. One eye may be focused for near vision and the other for far. As a result, you will be able to see with complete clarity when both eyes are open.
    3. Electrical heating is applied to the cornea: Using a special device, the doctor delivers precise heat to the markings made on the cornea. The corneal tissue shrinks slightly as heat is applied, resulting in a better shape for the surface of the eye.

Although the effects of surgery are permanent, the eye is still subject to natural changes associated with age. Changes of this nature can include cataract development and stiffening of the lens, both of which may lead you to need reading glasses.

If you think that the CK procedure is right for your vision needs, schedule a consultation at Sloane Vision Center by calling (630) 225-7293. We offer a wide range of vision surgeries for the correction of refractive disorders and cataracts.

    Understanding Cataracts

Apart from refractive disorders, cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss. They tend to appear in aging individuals, but, in rare cases, can develop in younger adults.

This video explores some of the visual effects of cataracts. The most noticeable signs may be evident at night, when halos can appear around light sources and cause high distortion from glare. During the day, cataracts may only cause blurred vision.

Find out if you are a good candidate for cataract surgery by visiting Sloane Vision Center. Make an appointment on our website or by calling us at (630) 225-7293.
